If you are Christian and living or travelling in Japan, do you have somewhere to go for Sunday service? A majority of Japanese are atheists, so it may be difficult to actually find a church at which to attend mass.

It is said that Christians in Japan make up only about 1 % of the population. In addition, many Japanese visit shrines or temples only on New Year’s Day or for sightseeing. There are historically many shrines and temples in Japan, and it is especially exciting to visit Kyoto or Nara for these visits. But if you go to church every Sunday, I am sure you want to attend a true Sunday service even during your time in Japan.

There are many historical churches in Yokohama, Hakodate, Nagasaki, and so on, so when you go sightseeing in such areas you may find churches popular for their architecture and art.

Unfortunately, when you go to attend Sunday service near your hotel in Tokyo, I places may turn out to be much harder to find.

Below I introduce 5 churches in Tokyo. I hope the following will help you to pursue your faith even while you are in Japan.

Ginza Church

If you are planning on going shopping around Ginza, you can stop by Ginza Church. This is a Methodist church. Every Sunday you can join the morning service. If you cannot go there in the morning, this church offers an evening service as well.

One feature of this church is a noon service held Monday through Saturday. If Japanese or foreign Christians want to go to church and they only have lunch time available for prayer, they can go on their lunch break! Similarly if you end up sightseeing on Sunday, you can attend this service on another day of the week.

Ginza is such a famous area for shopping that you might be surprised at this church. There are a lot of English classes held here as well.

St. Francis Xavier Church

Are you a Catholic? If so, I recommend St. Francis Xavier Church in Kanda. This church has brilliant stained glass windows. They are a must-see and of course they make the mass on Sunday so eloquent. This church is also a registered Tangible Cultural Property.

If you cannot make it on Sunday, you can attend mass on Friday as well.

Tokyo Lutheran Church

As the name implies, this is a Lutheran church. You can attend the English service every Sunday morning.

This area (Shin-okubo) is known as Tokyo’s Korea Town. If you are Korean or interested in Korean food and culture, why don’t you head over to this church? After the service, you can have lunch at a Korean restaurant!

As soon as you enter the chapel, a classic organ catches your eye. Singing out praise to the Lord alongside this special organ may be your finest memory in Japan.
