Karaoke is around every corner in Japan and you can enjoy singing your favorite songs any time with the many 24-hour karaoke places here. There are a few popular chains for karaoke that you can visit and most of them have a wide range of songs for you to choose from in a variety of languages, including English.
Karaoke box chains are probably the places you’ll want to check out first. Most have a different rate for weekdays and weekends and can have drastically different prices depending on what time you come. Daytime prices can be around 100-300 yen while night time prices (clocked in around 6pm), can cost quadruple that amount, especially on the weekends. Thankfully, the karaoke boxes have their prices shown at the door so you won’t be surprised at what price you get inside.
Here are a few popular karaoke chains in Japan:
Karaoke Utahiroba provides a drink bar in its price, so you can enjoy drinking and singing for the price of one.
Karaoke Kan is very cheap, though their drink bar is not included in the price of the room.
Big Echo is self-described as the largest karaoke chain in Japan and has stores even overseas.
Pasela Resorts offers a unique experience as their stores have different themes from anime to Egyptian themes. They also offer many other types of services besides karaoke, such as cafes and ballrooms.
If you want a more western feel of karaoke where you can sing in front of many people, there are a few Izakaya around Japan that offer karaoke as well. Or, if you feel a bit adventurous, you might want to try a snack bar. Snack bars are a type of hostess bar, usually smaller and with an older staff. You can enjoy alcohol there and sing along with other patrons. The prices here vary, but usually snack bars have a table charge of around 500 yen or more which may include a few rounds of karaoke. Some have all you can drink offers that include karaoke and can cost 1000 yen. Don’t be shy to ask the Madam of the bar (called ‘Mama-san’ at snack bars) to see how much it is to use the karaoke machine.
If you don’t feel like leaving your house, there are also various karaoke machines that you can use to enjoy singing at home. The cheaper of these machines can run around 20,000 yen, but can go up to 100,000 yen or more for more sophisticated types. There’s even a machine called a mute-mic for around 5000 yen and it allows you to sing as loud as you want without disturbing your neighbors.
