Bill to Be Submitted to Extraordinary Session of Parliament This Month to Abolish Saturday Mail Delivery

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has decided to submit an amendment to the law needed to abolish Saturday mail delivery to a special session of the Diet scheduled to be convened this month. The MIC are planning to abolish Saturday deliveries of regular mail, except for express delivery and Yu-pack, in order to provide stable postal services.

However, the Ministry have not yet submitted a bill to the Diet to amend the law, citing the need to focus on dealing instead with customers who were disadvantaged by Japan Post’s improper sales of insurance products.

The Japan Post Group has been apologizing to the public and has put together a list of measures to prevent a reoccurrence, including reviewing the rules for selling insurance products, in preparation for the resumption of operations.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has decided to proceed with procedures to abolish Saturday deliveries in light of a series of initiatives to improve operations.
