5 Best Places to Catch the First Tokyo Sunrise of 2022

The first day of the year is always a memorable day to catch the beautiful bright dawn. Many people travel to the best spots to seize the day in one timeless moment.

1. Osanbashi, Yokohama

Osanbashi is a passenger terminal for sea transportations, located in Yokohama. However, this has been one of the most famous spots to capture the beautiful dawn sky. 

Usually, people can walk along the seaside or drive their car to the pier of Osanbashi. A morning bike around the dock is also a great idea. You will feel a relaxing sensation to match with the morning exercise. 

There will be a lot of couples or packs of families enjoying the sensations of the early morning atmosphere along the way. 

Some people chose to stay in the car facing the seashore and wait for the sunrise with their loved ones. Snacks and some jazz music will also be a perfect companion while revelling at the moment. 

2. Mount Takao

Another destination to catch up on sunrise is the captivating Mount Takao. It’s a perfect destination for those of you who like a little bit of a journey and adventure. 

Climb to the top of Mount Takao to see the sunrise, and while it’s not too strenuous, make sure you wear comfortable shoes. 

Don’t worry, for those of you who are not used to climbing mountains, a ropeway will take you to the top of Mount Takao without having to climb (you can check the cable car times here, last year the New Year Special all-night cable car was cancelled due to COVID-19.

The ropeway price is relatively low (around 600 Yen one way, but changes with the season). Many people prefer to ascend using the ropeway and descend the mountain on foot to enjoy the morning atmosphere and the fantastic natural beauty. 

3. Rooftop Deck, Haneda Airport

Haneda Airport serves as the most exciting place to catch the sunrise, next to the flight path! 

You can take a rest in the seats provided, enjoying the planes passing by while waiting for the sunrise—a fantastic experience. Besides the beautiful sun, you can see the take-off and land of the aircrafts too!

There are also cafes and kombini for you to pack up the snacks or drinks, a fascinating early morning trip to brighten up your day! 

Besides the dawn, the Haneda Airport rooftop deck is also a great place to relax at night. You can enjoy the beauty of the moonlight coupled with the view of the plane lights passing by at night.

4. Kasai Rinkai Park

Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, Tokyo, is one of the best spots in Tokyo to stop by and enjoy the sunrise. 

Enjoy the sea breeze while walking along the beach, or sit on benches. You will see the beauty of the orange sunrise over the soothing sea view.

You can do many things at Kasai Rinkai Park and visit the aquarium or the giant Ferris wheel. 

While waiting for the sunrise, the Ferris wheel usually will light up with stunning light. This view is also sure to spoil your eyes in addition to the soothing sea view.

Usually, Kasai Rinkai Park will be full of people on the first day of the year. So, don’t miss out on getting the best spot!

5. Sumida River, Across Tokyo Skytree

On the edge of the Sumida River, there is a large garden and several coffee shops opposite Tokyo Skytree. This is where you will get the best view behind the Tokyo Skytree to get the first sunrise.

This place has always been a great spot to spend time with family or loved ones. Especially in the morning and evening, many children play in the park, and people exercise along the riverbank.

You can enjoy the morning by enjoying a glass of coffee and sitting and relaxing here. The unique view of the Tokyo Skytree and the surrounding cities makes the sunrise glow very beautiful.
