Enjoying Tokyo Indoors: 5 Fun Things to Do in Any Weather

By ADP Sep 6, 2018

The weather in Tokyo has been temperamental, to say the least. Alternating between scorching hot sunny skies and booming thunderstorms, it can seem like you never want to leave the house. However, there are plenty of things to do in Tokyo that do not require you to brave the moody weather. Plus, you can get some exercise and have fun while doing them! These are the best things to do in Tokyo when you just can’t stand the fickle weather any longer.

Go skating at the Tokyo Dome Roller Skate Arena

The Tokyo Dome Roller Skate arena, located in Korakuen on the fourth floor of the Prism Hall at Tokyo Dome, is one of the city’s largest indoor rinks and boasts a main area as well as a smaller, practice area for children and beginners, so you don’t have to worry about embarrassing yourself. Lessons are offered (in Japanese only) so you can develop your skate skills slowly, and you can even choose between roller skates or in-line skates, depending on what you prefer. Admission costs 1,200 yen on weekdays for two hours and you can bring your own skates or rent a pair for 500 yen. The area is family-friendly, great for children, groups, or anyone who just needs a fun break from the weather.

Learn to fight at Krav Maga Tokyo (MagaGym)

If you are looking for more of a workout or if you need to release some stress, try a Krav Maga class at MagaGym in Roppongi or Akasaka. Krav Maga is a fighting technique originated by the Israel Defense Force, but has since become a popular exercise because it is easy to understand and learn and fun to practice! Both gyms offer beginner trial classes for 2,000 yen and you can choose from Krav Maga technique, core training, or even bag workout. It is suitable for men and women of all ages. The classes are intense and will increase your heart rate, but you will build fitness and increase muscle memory, making this activity exciting but also good for you! Since the classes are held indoors, you can work up a sweat in the comfort of the air conditioning and then go home relaxed, yet full of energy and ready to take on the world! Plus, if you like it, you can sign up for a longer membership and become a combat expert.

Climb a wall at the Rocky Bouldering Gym Shinagawa

If you are feeling more adventurous, try out a bouldering course at the Rocky Bouldering Gym in Shinagawa. Bouldering is indoor climbing without ropes, but don’t worry, the ground is soft so it is safe to fall. Rocky Bouldering is one of the largest climbing gyms in Tokyo and has two climbing areas to choose from. Routes are color-coded and vary from easy to difficult so that anyone can try it! The walls can be as short as 3 meters high, so it is an activity that is suitable for men and women of all ages. The gym offers introductory experiences from 30 minutes to 1 hour, starting at around 1,500 yen including shoes. Don’t let the short experience fool you, bouldering is one of the most difficult forms of exercises as it requires the use of almost every muscle in your body. The gym is about a 30 minute walk from the nearest train station but if that seems daunting to you (or if you just want to stay away from the weather, isn’t that the whole point?) don’t worry, you can take the Shinagawa Pier bus ride to and from the station to avoid the outdoors!

Relax in a yoga class at YogaJaya

If you need to relax and unwind, or if the weather just stresses you out, try taking a yoga class at YogaJaya. There are many yoga studios in Tokyo, but this is one of the few that provide classes in English (or bi-lingual translation available) and offer a reasonably priced trial pass that costs 3,000 yen for 5 classes. The studio is located in Ebisu but requires registration online in advance. There are many classes and instructors to choose from, depending on yoga type and class level. Yoga is known to improve overall health by reducing stress, increasing flexibility, and address several psychological and physical symptoms. You won’t regret trying it out for yourself! Classes are typically 60 to 80 minutes long, a short time to spend in order to gain enormous benefits. You will feel healthier, stronger, calmer, and more energized, and perhaps best of all, you will forget about the horrible weather outside while you meditate and move your body.

Go bowling or play games at EST Shibuya

Finally, last but certainly not least, if you are in need of a chilled, fun night out with your friends and you are a competitive person, playing games at EST Shibuya is the perfect way to escape the heat (or rain). EST Shibuya is a fun and also very centrally located bowling alley which also boasts billiards, darts, ping pong, and karaoke. Open from morning until earlier morning, this bowling alley will shelter you from the weather all through the night. Plus, there is a café in the basement with a huge menu of game snacks and drinks to choose from. Bowling costs around 500 yen per game plus the cost of shoe rentals (unless you happen to own your own bowling shoes) but there are 3-game plans you can purchase as well. Don’t forget to bring socks! Also, if you are not convinced yet, the bowling alley occasionally hosts live music nights and other special events, so check the calendar for details. You will have so much fun with your friends you’ll forget about the weather completely.

From climbing to stretching to skating and beyond, Tokyo is a city that offers endless fun activities that are also healthy for you. If the weather has got you down, try out some of these indoor classes with your friends, or better yet, use the opportunity to make new friends! Maybe you will even find a new hobby that will last longer than the temperamental weather.
