CAN EAT- an innovative web service for food restrictions

By Guidable Writers Jun 7, 2019

Are you following a specific diet? Is your diet a vegan, vegetarian, Halal, Buddhist, Kosher, Hindu, gluten-free, or lactose-free etc one? Do you have any food allergies?

With CAN EAT, you can enjoy your food without worrying about your food restrictions. Today we would like to introduce you a new service which allows everyone to eat outside no matter what kind of food preference they have!

What is CAN EAT?

CAN EAT is a web service that sorts through the restaurant menu at a restaurant in accordance with the dietary needs registered by the user and displays items only those edible to the user. It then directly sends the dish orders chosen to the kitchen.

We are aiming for a service that “Provides a meal for everyone”.

‘Food’ is not only an important element for our health and livelihood but also a means for people to create new relationships and also strengthen the relationships among one another.

However, there are 31 billion people in the world who have food restrictions. Due to allergies, Religious beliefs, health issues, pregnancy etc… There are a lot of people who find it very troublesome to eat out because they have to care about the food they can eat and cannot eat.

CAN EAT is here to ‘personalize’ the dishes so that everyone can enjoy eating out without stress.

All you have to do for CAN Eat is:

  1. Register the food you cannot eat.
  2. Trust the restaurant to serve you based on your preferences
  3. Enjoy yourself and eat out in Japan without stress!

Why Do we need CAN EAT?

More and more people have food restrictions for different reasons. CAN EAT is here to solve this problem by providing this web service.  Here are the reasons why we need CAN EAT.

Increased number of Food Allergies.

The number of people with food allergies is increasing rapidly nowadays. According to research done by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology in 2013, 407,000 Japanese elementary and secondary school students have a food allergy. This number has increased by 20% compared to the same research done in 2004.

Increased number of Vegan and Vegetarian Diets.

The number of Vegan Diets is increasing rapidly. According to GlobalData, the number of vegans has increased by 600% in the past 3 years. Also according to the Fujioilholdings, 38.7% of the millennial generation answered that they are vegetarian.

It is a challenge for a Japanese restaurant to respond to this phenomenon. Cheryl-Ann, who has tried using the prototype of CAN EAT,  has said that it is very inconvenient to eat out.

“It can be very inconvenient as a vegetarian when eating out. Especially when I’m invited to go out with friends, I always have to check the restaurants menu before to ensure if they have vegetarian options or not. If they don’t, I am usually limited to the very basic items on the menu. So if there is a service like CANEAT, It would be so much more convenient, and I’d be able to enjoy eating out more.”

Increased Awareness in food restrictions during pregnancy.

Food restrictions are also an important issue for pregnant women.

Apart from the basic food restrictions such as alcohol and raw fish, people are becoming more concerned with the amount of nutrition they are consuming.

2020 Olympics

Japanese restaurants will need to face the challenges of food restrictions with more foreigners coming to Japan for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

According to research done by Euromonitor International, the market for Halal food will increase from $453billion to $583billion in 2020. More and more restaurants are now serving Halal food.

It is expected that more and more people with food restrictions will be coming to Japan in 2020. We are trying to help people with different needs so that more visitors can enjoy Japanese food.

What is the goal of CAN EAT?

This Summer CAN EAT will release its 1st service  “Attendance + Food Restriction Support System”.

Have you ever been asked about your food restrictions when you attend a wedding or eating at a hotel? It can be troublesome and embarrassing to tell the waiter about your situation; You need to tell them what you cannot eat, sometimes why you cannot eat it and also the amount of food you cannot eat.

With our service, you can enter detailed information about your food restrictions.

Select the reasons for your food restrictions, such as being Muslim, being a vegetarian, being pregnant, etc.

And you can also share your profile with your friends and restaurants, so you won’t ‘miss the timing’ of telling your friends and servers your restrictions. When you organize a event, you can also make a decision about where to go based on your friend’s profiles.

The vision of CAN EAT

CAN EAT was founded on 2019/4/1.  In order to achieve our vision of  “Promoting Food Diversity”, we have set up a few future goals.

2019 July: A-version release

2019 winter: B-version release

2020: CAN EAT release

We are also planning to expand our business to a wider area.

‘Mobile Order System’ enables ordering from your phone

It might be hard for you to find out the ingredients of meals if you go to normal restaurants. We are planning to make a system which allows users to order from their phone and send the information directly to the kitchen.

Visualize the data for Marketing.

By using the data gathered with our service, we will be able to provide the information to restaurants for a Marketing purpose. By providing more detailed information about food choices, we are aiming to create a society which is more tolerant to food restrictions.

Expand the service to home cooking and ready-made meals.

After supporting people who are eating out, we will expand our business to home cooking and ready-made meals such as conbini food.

Also, our service will be able to identify the food users, in order to provide more value to them.

Entering the health care industry

There are people who face food restrictions due to health issues, such as high blood pressure and diabetes. We aim to create a better society by supporting the eating habits of patients with Chronic Diseases.
