Our Top Secondhand Store Picks! The Best Truly Cheap Vintage Stores in Tokyo

By Margherita May 2, 2022

Tokyo is truly a mecca for vintage clothes, thrift shops and secondhand store lovers, but even if we are not talking about high-end brands and unique pieces, things can get quite pricy.

Vintage and recycle shops were mostly born under the concept of creating more affordable clothing, less waste, and reasonable bargains.

You can get your hands on designer items in most vintage shops in Tokyo. Still, if you are looking for essential items or everyday outfits without resorting to going shopping in expensive department stores or relying on fast fashion, cheap vintage and recycling stores are exactly what you need.

Tokyo is a Haven for Secondhand Store Lovers!

Let’s discover some of the best truly cheap vintage stores within the city!

Tanpopo House

Tanpopo House is probably one of—if not the cheapest—secondhand shops in Japan. One of the main selling points of Tanpopo is that you can get your hands on a coordinated outfit with just one 500 yen coin. Most of the items at Tanpopo house are below 1000 yen, and there are racks dedicated to items as cheap as 300 and 100 yen. You can find non-branded clothes, fast fashion brands, and occasionally some branded pieces. I have found a good selection of jackets and dresses at Tanpopo House in Koenji. The small store also has two fitting rooms so you can try everything on before buying.

Mujin No Fukuya, the “Unmanned Vintage Shop”

Near Nogata station in Nakano Ward, you can find one of the most quirky vintage shops in the whole city. This self-service vintage clothing shop opened in 2020, and, as the name suggests, there is no staff at all. You purchase the items you want using a ticket vending machine: items are classified by colored hangers, and you can refer to the chart on the wall and purchase the corresponding ticket at the tiny vending machine in the corner.

Prices are definitely on the cheaper side, with most items ranging between 500 and 3000 yen, from trousers and jeans to t-shirts, shoes, and accessories.

The space is a little cramped, but it is open 24 hours all year round.

Second Street – the Secondhand Shop Chain

Second Street is a chain of secondhand shops with more than 700 stores nationwide. The main focus is on clothing, shoes, and bags, but it also carries a wide range of products, including high-brand goods, furniture, and home appliances.

The selection of used clothes is great, from cheaper items to more expensive branded items. We recommend the Harajuku store if you’re looking for brands and more expensive items and the Koenji store for more wallet-friendly everyday items.

Kinji Used Clothing Harajuku Branch

Kinji is a spacious shop packed with clothes located within walking distance from Harajuku station. The shop has an extensive selection for both men and women, from trousers, jeans, skirts, and colorful dresses, to cardigans and jackets. You can also find an excellent selection of American college-style crewnecks and sweats. For music lovers–don’t miss out on the impressive selection of used band t-shirts from metal to indie and electronic; you might also find some expensive but rare pieces among the pile.

Mode Off Ueno

Mode Off is another great go-to cheap secondhand store if you are shopping on a budget. Like Second Street, Mode Off is a chain with stores all around Tokyo. Since most well-known vintage shopping areas—Shimokitazawa, Koenji, and Harajuku—are located on the western side of the capital, having some aces in the hole if you live in the eastern suburbs of Tokyo is great for your wallet.

The Ueno branch is a 4-floor store. Most of the items are priced between 500 and 2000 yen, and you can choose from an assortment of clothes, shoes, and accessories. It is also not rare to find pieces from well-known brands in this huge shop.

Address: 110-0005 Tokyo, Taito, Ueno 4-2-3
Opening Times: 10:00-21:00
