Biwaichi Routes and Itinerary
The entire Biwa Lake loop is around 200 Km and can be done in 2-3 days.
Starting in Otsu, just outside of Kyoto, cyclists follow well-marked paths along the southern coast of the lake, passing scenic spots like the Ukimido Floating Temple in Katata.
After crossing the Biwako Ohashi Bridge, riders head through Moriyama and Hikone, home to Hikone Castle, before reaching the picturesque town of Nagahama for an overnight stay. The second day takes you along the quieter northern shores, offering beautiful views and a chance to visit Chikubu Island by ferry.
Continuing through Makino and Imazu, you pass by the famous Shirahige Shrine, whose torii gate stands in the water, before staying in the rural town of Takashima.
On the final day, the route along the western shoreline takes you through Omimaiko, where you can relax on the beach, before completing the loop back in Otsu, perhaps visiting Miidera Temple to end the journey.
If the full loop sounds intimidating, you can consider different starting points other than Otsu, and just cycle a section of the loop. If starting from Maibara, a good stopping point for the first night would be around Omi-Takashima (approximately 75 km), with the second night near Omihachiman (around 86 km).
For beginners opting for a 2-day, 1-night trip, covering the lake’s northern half (about 150 km) might be better than the full 200 km route. Alternatively, consider the advantages of a more relaxed 3-day, 2-night trip for a more enjoyable experience.
Along the way, there are plenty of accommodation options, including ryokans, and the route is well-supported with convenience stores and restaurants.
