Following the article “Steps on How to Dress Appropriately for Job Interviews in Japan“we have written previously, check out some of our outfit suggestions that will give you an idea what to wear the next time you go for that much coveted job interview.
Here are 5 recommended hints for men to wear:
-
What color makes good impression for suits?
Suits are imperative in any formal office environment, but which color best suits? Black? Gray? Blue? In Japan normally, “Navy-Blue” or “Dark-Blue” suits makes a good impression for businessmen. Black looks chic but this color makes your face pale. Navy-blue and dark-blue color looks elegant, calm and makes your face brighter. Making a good initial impression is the most important when job hunting.
-
How many suits do you need for job hunting?
Buying suits are not so cheap but you better have at least “2 suits” for job hunting. There are 2 major reasons why:
No 1. For back-up just in case
Even if you carry a folding umbrella every day, you may get caught in a heavy rain all of a sudden while you’re heading to that company interview. If you have an alternative suit to change, you will still have chance to go to company with an appropriate outfit.
No 2. Wrinkly suits are unacceptable!
If you use public transportations on the way to an interview, your suit may get wrinkly while sitting on the bus or train. Especially if you get caught in a crowded train during rush hours.
-
Shoes and belts
【Shoes】
“Simple Black shoes” are the best types that Japanese people like. Brown is also acceptable but this color has the tendency of not blending with your suit or outfit so black is the safest color you can wear in any formal situation. It’s the basic fashion staple in any wardrobe. Both for men and women.
【Belts】
Belts should be also the same color as your shoes and needs to be “Simple” and “Plain”. Leather belts are the best and they will really pump up your whole outfit to the next business level.
-
The difference between winter and summer suits
As you’re living in Japan, many of you may have experienced “Humidity” during the summer here. Especially in June, there’s a rainy season for about a month and its gets really uncomfortably wet everywhere. To make people work easier during this season, we have the “COOL BIZ” system from May 1st~September 30th according to the Ministry of the Environment and businessmen don’t need to wear tie on this term.
However, as you’re still job hunting, you need to make a good impression by being prim and proper all the time. Make yourself appropriate by being presentable. You must wear tie all the time while your looking for a job. Fortunately, summer suits are made with breathable materials so it will keep you feeling comfortable either in rainy or humid weather.
-
What color do you prefer for your tie?
1. Dark-Blue color
Impression:Smart, elegant and sincerity.
2. Bordeaux color
Impression:Passionate color
3. Corn color (checkered)
Impression:Friendliness and happiness
4. Gray color (with fine patterns)
Impression:Security and stability
5. Dark-Blue color (checkered)
Impression:Royalty
6. Aqua color (checked tie)
Impression:Fresh and cheerful
【ATTENTION】
There are also colors that you must avoid wearing:
- Flashy Pink color
- Purple color
- Too much patterns (tribal)
And lastly take this very important note for consideration. When you have an interview with any company, you must be there 15 minutes early before your scheduled time and prep yourself accordingly. Rushing in late or sweaty is neither good or acceptable. So make sure that you are mentally, emotionally and physically ready. All the best in your interviews!
