Websites to Watch the Tokyo Olympics Online

Here are some websites on which to watch the games, and how to navigate the Japanese sites to find the live games and change the settings for the English commentary.

Gorin.jp

Gorin.jp is the official broadcaster for the Olympics in Japan. The site features a live stream of the games (with an English commentary option), a TV timetable for each channel showing the games, news updates and current Japan medal counts, and interviews with the Japanese team members. The highlights and news are generally focused on the Japanese players.

How to Watch Live:

– Go to the Gorin.jp homepage.
– The live stream shows on the left-hand side of the website under the “LIVE! 注目競技を生配信!” section.
– Click the game you would like to watch and press play (a 15 second ad will appear).

For the Commentary:

Hover over the video and click the headphones button in the bottom right corner. It will automatically be on the “INT” (international) setting but if you’d like to hear more in-depth commentary you can choose “ENG” (English) for the English detailed commentary! Especially useful if you’d like to know more about the players or the rules of the game.

You can find the live schedule here.

NHK

NHK is another official broadcaster that offers live-stream viewing of the games online, over their TV channels and via radio. There is an English website available so this may be easier to navigate.

How to Watch Live:

From the English site:

– Visit the NHK Olympics English page.
– Click on the game you would like to watch and it will play automatically.

For the commentary:

Hover over the video and click the headphones in the bottom right corner. Depending on the games you can choose “Ambience” (no commentary, just announcements and introductions), or “English” (an English commentary with details about the players or rules).

From the Japanese site:

– Visit the dedicated Olympic page.
– Scroll down to where it says “ライブ (実況なし/英語実況)”. This part in brackets refers to the commentary.
実況なし = No (Japanese) live commentary
英語実況 = English live commentary.
– Click on the game you would like to watch and it will play automatically.

For the Commentary:

Hover over the video and click the headphones in the bottom right corner. Depending on the games you can choose  実況なし(No (Japanese) live commentary), 英語 (English commentary) and in some cases 日本語 (ロボット実況) , which is an automatic robot commentary of the play.

You will find a time-table for the Olympic games available on NHK channels here (Japanese only).

Watch Worldwide: Catch Up on the Tokyo Olympics Online

Some countries or areas may not have access to the above two websites, so if you would like to get the latest news in real time you can check out the Official Live blog on the Olympics website.
